Once upon a time, an ambitious woman entered a successful store with a reputation for beautiful, fine quality merchandise. She walked right up to the owner and said, “Sir, I am very impressed with your establishment. I’d like to come on board and build a career here. I can promise you I’ll work hard and I’ll do a great job. In return, all I ask for is the following:

To begin with, I’d like to make a 25% profit on everything I sell at retail.

And, I’d like a 5% bonus if I sell more than $700 net in any given month.

I would also like a 4% bonus on any new sales people that I hire.

If I bring in five new sales people who bronze, I’d like to be promoted. Since I’ll be supervising more personnel, I will want 11% on their net sales. Of course I’ll want this on my own sales too.

I’m sure many of my sales people will want to do just what I am doing and build their own sales teams. I will work very closely with them to help them succeed. For these breakaway sales teams, I deserve to be paid overrides of 7% on level one, 5% on level two, and 1% on level three.

When I do well, I expect lots of praise and recognition, not to mention earning free and reduced priced products, special awards and gifts – and, yes, dream vacations to exotic locations!

By the way, I’m afraid I’m not into the 9 to 5 scene. So I’ll want to set my own schedule and work when it suits me best.

And of course, my family ALWAYS comes first! So… WHEN CAN I START?”

After the storeowner recovered from his shock, he roared with laughter. “Lady, you can’t be serious! You’re living in a dream world. You’ll never find an opportunity like that – ANYWHERE!”
